A guerra civil no Sri Lanka, travada entre rebeldes separatistas tamil e do governo do Sri Lanka - um conflito que tem correr quente e frio durante 26 anos, e já custou mais de 70.000 vidas - podem agora ser aproximar do seu fim. A etnia tâmil rebeldes vigor chamados os Tigres de Libertação do Tamil Eelam (LTTE ou, ou apenas "Tigres Tamil") tem lutado para a criação de um estado tâmil independente desde 1983, utilizando as duas guerras convencionais técnicas e métodos terroristas. Desde 1987, os LTTE reivindicou a responsabilidade por cerca de 200 atentados suicidas, mais do que qualquer organização no mundo. Agora, desde o final 2008, agressivo das forças governamentais do Sri Lanka ter tratado muitos graves derrotas aos LTTE, capturando cidades e aeroportos, e, recentemente, os restantes armadilhagem 1000 (estimado) LTTE rebeldes em um 37 km ² (15 m²) área, cercada por 50.000 tropas governamentais.
