Mikhael Subotzky, South AfricaEssay: Die Vier Hoeke and Umjiegwana (The Four Corners and the Outside)
Die Vier Hoeke and Umjiegwana is an in-depth study of the South African prison and justice system. It has received widespread acclaim both in South Africa and internationally, winning the 2007 KLM Paul Huff Award, the Special Jurors Award at the 2005 Vles Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie in Bamako and the 2005 F25 Award for Concerned Photography.
Mikhael Subotzky,26, was born in Cape Town, South Africa. After graduating from the University of Cape Town in 2004, he has held solo exhibitions in important museums, among them the Foam Fotomuseum in Amsterdam (2007), and his prints are part of the permanent collections of the South African National Gallery (Cape Town), The Johannesburg Art Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art (New York). As a winner ofthe F25 Award, in 2006 he obtained a one-year-scholarship at Fabrica's Photography Department.
He recently joined Magnum Photos.
